Apocalypse Culture
“TWO-THOUSAND years have passed since the birth of Christ and the world is going mad. Nihilist prophets, born-again pornographers, transcendental schizophrenics and just plain folks are united in their belief in an imminent global catastrophe. What are the forces lurking behind this mass delirium?”
~from back cover of Apocalypse Culture
There is no book better equipped to shine light on the dark forces defined above than Adam Parfrey’s landmark work, Apocalypse Culture. First released in 1987, the work makes nice with deviants, artists, and the crazies. Full of conspiracy and suspicion its pages entice a permanent nagging voice behind the reader’s thoughts….”Just what is the logical conclusion of all this madness?”
Perhaps the world will not end. We’ve dodged Y2K, AIDS, Anthrax, reality TV, SARS, West Nile, Justin Bieber, and the Bush administration. With 2012 bearing down many are feeling frantic once again. When will it all go down? Next year? Next Month? Tomorrow?
If Apocalypse Culture teaches us anything, it’s not that the end of the world is imminent, but that it’s your life that is beating down to a personal Armageddon; and if we don’t stay vigilant in creating this crazy and obsessive society, what’s really the point anyhow?
Be sure to grab a copy for the bunker by visiting the Feral House store…
Is this the End? Let’s hope.
Many think that we’re living in the End Times. Are we? Doubtful. But there may be a silver lining to the end of civilization as we know it.
Take a look around and it will quickly become clear that the world is a wreck. Environmental degradation; International conflict; Celebrity Apprentice….the list goes on. And it would seem we are powerless to break the cycle. We forget that all the systems which hold us hostage are entirely of our own creation. We’ve forgotten that we’re making this shit up as we go along. We’re like a kidnapping victim whose fallen in live with our captor.
And what better then a world-wide catastrophe to jar us from our apathy?
Next time you think you feel a tremor under you feet; or nuclear powers start strutting; don’t be scared, be hopeful.
We need a release, like a teenage boy on an early morning bus ride. Perhaps an astroid strike, or a nice pandemic is exactly what we need to quit being so….bored.
